SKOKIE ROCKS

OUR NEXT SKOKIE ROCKS EVENT:

Devonshire County Fair (outdoor)

4400 Greenwood Ave, Skokie, IL

October 6, 2024 - 12:30 - 3:30 pm

Skokie Rocks is an ongoing community-wide arts outreach program where families and persons of all ages and abilities are invited to design, paint, hide and seek painted river rocks.  The project is intended to build bridges between different cultures and communities and help those who speak different languages to connect and communicate through art.  With the help of social media and available language translation apps, participants can comment on the painted rock in their native language.   Translation options then allow persons who speak different languages to communicate with each other through comments on the Skokie Rocks social media page.

This community-wide, diverse arts project offers more than a simple craft project; it is in direct complement to Skokie's slogan "Skokie Welcomes Everyone" and is in celebration of Skokie's participation in Illinois Arts & Humanities Month during the month of October 2024.

Rock painters are asked to label the underneath side of their rocks with #SKOKIE ROCKS or skokierocks.org before painting and hiding them in and around Skokie’s parks and playgrounds.  For a list of public parks in Skokie: https://www.skokieparks.org/

Rock Finders are invited to take photos of their found rocks and share/comment/tag them on social media with the tag #skokierocks.

To view images of the found rocks on social media, search online #skokierocks or join our Skokie Rocks Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/337581650006202

Skokie Rocks is an ongoing community art project allowing for individuals of different communities and languages to connect and communicate through social media images and online language translation apps.

This program is partially supported the Skokie Park District, Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission, and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

A little like a game of hide and seek, Skokie Rocks invites you to hide a painted rock – a secret place, but not too hard to find.

The rocks are there to brighten your day!   Hiding it is only half the fun.   Finding a rock that someone else hid completes the cycle.

Once you find a rock, take a photo and post it on Skokie Rocks Facebook page to share with your neighbors and friends.

Don’t forget to label underneath your rock: www.SkokieRocks.org

or #skokierocks

ROCK HUNTERS:   Submit a photo of your found rock on the Skokie Rocks Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/337581650006202

After posting the found rock, you can re-hide it for someone else to find or decide keep it.  The choice is yours!
