ARTIST'S RECEPTION: Saturday, August 25, 2012 (4:00 - 6:00 pm)
Evanston native Jim Lange graduated with honors from the Chicago Academy of Art and has worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years, creating award winning designs, logos, and illustrations for advertising agencies and local businesses. He designed the NBA logo Stay in School and the Olympic Dream Team logo. For McDonald’s, he created art for TV commercials, packaging, and promotions, most notably the McRib logo. He has also created designs for dozens of watches, in addition to basketball and soccer balls (for Reebok). His has created logos for the Chicago Triathlon for over 25 years. Most recently, he created a mural for the operating room at the new Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
In this exhibition, Jim shows works on canvas and wood which have a nostalgic feel, almost Victorian in nature. Many of his avian bird paintings have a tapestry appearance; blending, almost camouflaging the subject matter into the background. His works on distressed wood are particularly attractive featuring images of vintage chairs, bicycles and typewriters.
“I believe art is not what you see, but what makes you see. Each painting is born out of an idea that deals with iconic, eternal metaphors. These are images which say ‘yes’ to life and acknowledge the special connection we have with nature. My subject matter is well crafted, familiar forms found in nature often reinventing and abstracting them, and sourcing nature’s palette of patterns, colors, and creatures.”
