Robert Graham

“My fine art photography is formalist in nature and reflects my interest in the interplay of form, light, shadow and reflection. I am a professional presentation designer, and my work reflects my graphic design background. The photos in this exhibition were taken in 2020 at the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park.  I enjoy the contrasts in the natural forms of the tree and sky with the strong dark lines that are shown when I take a photograph from within a sculpture. I was also attracted to the sort of optical illusion created by the innermost circle and how it has an almost lens-like effect on the trees.”

Robert has been an active photographer for over 50 years. During the past decade, I have been concentrating on monochromatic fine art photography. My work has been accepted in numerous juried shows, and I was awarded an “Award of Excellence” by jurors for the Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists. This past year, I have exhibited in juried shows at the Evanston Art Center, the Bridgeport Art Center (twice) and the Peabody Estate at Grayslake. This is Robert’s first exhibition with Anatomically Correct Arts.

Dr. Kuhn Hong

Born in South Korea, Dr. Kuhn Hong began painting as a youth and pursued studies in the medical field.  After attending medical school, his love of painting continued and he joined a group of fellow med students to paint together on the weekends.  After graduating from medical school, Dr. Hong came to Chicago, completed residency training, and started his practice. His brushes lay aside while he was busy working at the hospital and raising his family with his wife. It wasn't until he joined a short-term medical mission trip down the Amazon River in Peru, when he picked up his ink pen and reignited his creative fervor.  While treating hundreds of patients in tiny river villages, he started to draw the people he encountered and the surrounding scenery in a small sketchbook during breaks. Copies of those ink drawings were shared with people who donated medicine, money, and paid for his mission expeditions. His first solo exhibition was in Seoul, Korea after the gallery owner saw his ink drawings.  After many years of medical practice and mission trips, Dr. Hong retired and moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to serve in a mission hospital as a volunteer radiologist for 5 years, from 2013 to 2018. During his time in Addis Ababa, he spent weekends and evening hours painting freely. He held exhibitions at Asni Gallery and at the mission hospital where he served.  He was invited to showcase his artwork at Viviene Gallerie in Paris, France as well. Dr. Hong retired from his medical career in 2013 after working at Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park for 34 years and now lives in Chicago with his family.

As a retired physician, he enjoys plein air painting, creating portraits and many more art related themes including migrants in Chicago. He is an active member of the Palette and Chisel, Plein Air Painters Chicago, Duneland Plein Air Painters and Area Artist Association and paints in his studio in Michigan City, Indiana.  His artwork was recently exhibited at the Lubeznik Center of Arts in Michigan City and the Korean Community Center of Chicago.

Dr. Kuhn has participated in Anatomically Correct’s Brush with Nature plein air program in both the Skokie NorthShore Sculpture Park and at Devonshire Park. This is Mr. Hong’s 3rd exhibition with Anatomically Correct Arts.

Kenny Lapins

Kenny’s Skokie Childhood Series features paintings of some of his favorite places and memories growing up in Skokie, IL, including some buildings which have been torn down over the years. His paintings are inspired by the Fauvist movement of the early 1900s, showcasing a vivid, expressionistic, and non‑naturalistic use of color. Through the juxtaposition of expressing modern scenes in a venerable style, Kenny presents his view of the world: the environments in which we live and work are full of art — angles, patterns and palettes can be found all around us if we choose to see them.  His hope is that we are left infused with what William Wordsworth called, “that blessed mood, in which the burthen of the mystery, in which the heavy and the weary weight of all this unintelligible world, is lightened.”  He hopes these paintings bring back pleasant memories to those who have experienced life in Skokie.  This is Kenny’s second exhibition with Anatomically Correct Arts.

Alexandra Stevenson

My recent paintings explore the intersecting shapes of architecture and nature quickly glimpsed as I move through my daily environment. The angle of a roofline or shape of a house seen through intervening trees and landscape catches my eye as a visual relationship: geometric and organic fused together. These “birds eye view” paintings are inspired by my daily drive along the Edens Expressway, where many mid-century homes of Skokie peek through tall trees in a variety of shapes and lines. I never tire of the views. Colors and shapes shift with the changing foliage of each season. The paintings are loose and abstracted to suggest the way I experience the views, each a quick, pleasing glimpse of color, shape, and line as I drive by.

Artist and educator Alexandra Stevenson finds inspiration in her daily environment. Her paintings begin with close observation, sketching, and photography as visual note taking, then develop in her studio where memory and sensation replace specificity in the painting process. Alexandra has taught high school studio art, art history, and literature, as well as adult ESL classes. She is currently a teaching artist with Evanston based Art Encounter and a volunteer at Literacy Chicago. Alexandra works in oil, acrylic, and mixed media from her studio in Ravenswood. She exhibits regularly in the Chicago area and beyond. Her artwork is in the collections of Deloitte, College of Lake County and many private collectors. This is Alexandra’s second exhibition with Anatomically Correct Arts.

This painting began at Anatomically Correct’s Brush With Nature plein air painting event at Emily Oaks Nature Center in Skokie. Working outside is challenging and exhilarating for an artist. All the senses become part of the process and final artwork: the feel of wind, the temperature of air, the floating sounds that pass. Skokie’s parks and preserves provide us all the valuable opportunity to engage fully with the natural world.
